3 Tips For Weight Training And Keeping Fit During Pregnancy

Article by Brad Davis

You don’t have to stop exercising when you become pregnant. In fact, there are many good reasons to maintain your level of fitness during pregnancy. Evidence shows that if you keep up a moderate level of activity, and do some weight training and body sculpting, you will look and feel better not only while pregnant, but afterward as well. To help you stay fit during your pregnancy, keep the following guidelines in mind.

Babies born to mothers who exercised during pregnancy have healthier birth weights. Babies with higher birth weights are more prone to becoming overweight as they age so this is important information to have. The best type of exercise is moderate and well rounded, so you can include some weight training along with stretching and cardio. This will not only help keep you fit and feeling good but can also have a positive impact on your baby.

Exercising during pregnancy is very beneficial but you will need to avoid certain movements and positions. Avoid exercises where you bend from the hips and avoid lifting weights over your head. Don’t do over head presses, for example, if you’re lifting weights while pregnant. Stay away from exercises that target the abdominal region, as well. You will also want to avoid movements where you’re lying flat on your stomach or back. It may sound like you can’t do anything, but there are several exercises that can be done while standing or seated that are also safe to do during pregnancy.

Before starting your weight training routine, you should do a little cardio to warm up and this is advisable whether or not you are pregnant. Following this, you should do some light stretching, but don’t try to go beyond what’s comfortable. Your goal shouldn’t be to work on improving your flexibility, but to maintain it while warming up your muscles. Make sure you don’t bounce and your stretches are smooth. This advice is critical during pregnancy, but also should be heeded at other times as well.

Afterwards, you start training with weights. You will find that you will benefit more from your exercise routine if you warm up first.

Clearly, it is not only possible to weight train and do body sculpting workouts during your pregnancy, but it is recommended for the benefits it provides. However, you do have to be careful not to strain yourself and you should always consult your doctor about what type of exercise is safe for you. Regular but moderate amounts of exercise will help improve your mood both during your pregnancy and afterwards.
